I covered a bit of the Berghoff history in my review of their lager. While I was visiting, I also managed to try their Hefe-Weizen. This is a Bavarian style wheat beer, unfiltered—and mistakenly served with a slice of lemon (no friggin’ fruit, please!)—and represents a pretty fair effort for a contract brewer. It’s certainly much better than it had been a few years before.
Brewed only using pale barley and wheat malt, it’s pale straw in color and pretty full in body, with plenty of banana and clove overtones to be expected. The finish is balanced and clean, with only the lingering yeasty esters traditional to the style.
Nice effort and a solid three mugs in my book.
