For a long time, the only craft beer game in Chicago was Goose Island. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it is nice that within the last couple of years, two more microbreweries have opened within the city limits.

Metropolitan Brewing is one of them, and it’s run by a husband and wife team. They brew not one, but two different lagers. Their Flywheel is a “bright lager” with a nice German attitude. If you added a “ge-” to the front of “flywheel,” I’m quite sure it would be German for “great lawnmower beer.”

This baby pours out as a nice, bright straw yellow with a huge head that leaves a considerable amount of lacing. You get a whiff of slightly effervescent hops on the nose, and the taste is a bright, light lager. It’s extremely refreshing and would definitely make my list of top lawnmower beers.

I like it when I try a new brewery, and the first beer I have of theirs I truly enjoy. Now I’m looking forward to the rest of their lineup and hope that they’ll be a solid choice when it comes to craft beer options.
