Comments:
Bell's Consecrator Doppelbock may best be described as the Doppelbock perfect for those who are typically reluctant to sample the style. Lighter in color than many of its brethren, Bell's pours dark red, closely resembling a fine Oktoberfest in the glass. The head is minimal, and overall the beer is as lightly carbonated as any I have ever tried. While this may seem like a drawback, I thought it aided the overall quality of the beer, as it was very smooth going down and the flavors seemed to be much more enhanced. It smelled quite good in the glass, with the sugary flavor very detectable. Like the color, the flavor was not as overwhelming as is typical of many craft Doppelbocks. It had a very sweet, malty flavor with strong hints of caramel and molasses, as well as a slight fruity tinge to it. As is typical of this style, there was a slight aftertaste, though the overall sweetness of the beer made it very tolerable. While diehard fans of this style may find this particular Doppelbock to be a bit of a lightweight, I would enthusiastically add it to the already impressive list of craft brews from the fine folks at Bell's.
