It was a bad evening in my house: I had four beers and found out three of them were skunky, too skunky to review. It might have been because the beer itself was bad, but it may have also been a storage problem on my part. Since I couldn’t tell where the problem originated, I felt I couldn’t give them a fair review. This basically sucked because I’d gotten the stuff out of state and looked forward to adding some new places to the Beer Dorks list.At any rate, it meant when I popped open this Duveneck’s Dortmunder from Barrel House, I prayed that it would be all right. It seemed to be fine though. It poured big—huge head with lots of lacing and plenty of carbonation. On the first taste I got some caramel malty flavor along with some burnt coffee-like roasted flavor on the end. And I got a fair amount of water. Argh. Not another watery beer!
So I let it open up a bit, and sure enough, the flavors combined so that I got a big malty mouthfeel and an overall “Dortmunder” feeling as opposed to caramel, water, burnt, and more water. It’s still slightly watery, but at least it’s a highly drinkable brew.
