We headed over to the Old Capital Brew Works at 525 S. Gilbert in Iowa City. While it doesn’t currently sell outside of the pub, if you find yourself in Iowa, it is your duty as a beer dork to head over and see what they had to offer. We liked the place and our server Anna so much, we went back to give her a Beer Dorks shirt.
What I really wanted to try was their Bourbon Brown, but the keg was empty. So, I settled for my second choice, the Straight Pipe Porter.
As second choices go, it wasn’t too bad. It was so dark, even the head was dark. And it was thick. So, it met the initial criteria of having the color and consistency of used motor oil.
You could smell the malt and hints of banana. It made claims of hints of chocolate milk, but that didn’t come out in the nose.
The flavor was, of course, like the smell: malty. It was smooth and had those hints of banana. As far as the chocolate milk flavor—well let’s put it this way, you wouldn’t fool a blindfolded first-grader. Still, it was a good beer, and I had another when we went back after the brew fest for our cool down.
