I’m always intrigued by beers that include “different” ingredients. OK, so they’d be verboten according to the Reinheitsgebot—those German purity laws that stipulate a beer can only be made from barley, hops, and water (and later they allowed wheat). Still, it’s refreshing to have a beer that offers something different from the same old stuff.

However, the St. Croix Maple Ale is not that kind of refreshing. When I saw it in the store, I thought, “Cool! Beer with maple syrup! I can drink this for breakfast!” And of course I was kidding because any kind of craft beer needs to be savored and enjoyed, not necessarily poured over pancakes.

The reality is that you probably could drink this beer for breakfast without any repercussions of drinking alcohol so early in the morning, because this stuff is basically water. Maple flavor? Hell if I could taste it. In fact, any sort of flavor would’ve been a bonus here. Even if you’re a beer dork, I’d get some actual maple syrup for your pancakes and save yourself the disappointment.
