First of all, let me begin by proudly stating that I, Nigel, am a Hophead. It's true. Bitter is in fact better, and I've never met a finely hopped craft brew that I didn't like. I must admit, however, that I've never met a craft IPA quite as unique as Dogfish Head's 90 Minute Imperial IPA. When I first stumbled across this brew at my local retailer I was giddy as a schoolgirl, as it was the first time it was available in my area. Never one to shy away from a challenge, I picked up a 4-pack of 12 oz. bottles, thinking I would easily be able to finish it off over the course of the evening while watching the local baseball team (hint: they're named after beer) beat up on the lowly team just to the south. Big mistake. 3 hours and 4 brews later, I was in my shorts on the patio, scolding squirrels for voting Republican and informing the neighborhood that I am in fact the Walrus. After waking up in a hungover daze the next day, I realized two things: 1, unfortunately, I am not the Walrus and 2, this beer may best be enjoyed in small doses. A few weeks later I was back on the horse, enjoying what is damn near a perfect brew. The beer pours a perfect dark amber color, with a light head that dissipates in short order. The aroma would send any Hophead into a euphoric state that may frighthen those around him. The taste is, well, phenomenal. Very spicy, with enough hops to burn your tastebuds into submission. Needless to say, this is an after dinner brew. Should you ever be in a situation where you are forced to drink crappy macros (weddings, graduations, etc.), one Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA will make everything better, as you won't even notice the vile toiiet water you are about to indulge in. I noticed a born-on date on the neck of the bottle stating the beer was bottled a mere 3 weeks before its consumption, though it's debatable as to what effect the freshness has on the overall drinkability of the beer. Overall, I would consider this a definite leader among the many fine craft Imperial IPAs.
