Baby-boy and I were in Minnesota the other weekend, helping some friends of ours move stuff into parental storage before they moved overseas for a year. Of course, since we were in Minnesota, that meant hitting a few liquor stores to stock up on some beer that hasn’t made its way to Chicago.

At the first stop, I saw a wall of many varieties of August Schell beer, and I didn’t quite know what to do. Should I get some of everything? What if it’s not all that good? Luckily, Schell also came in a nice variety pack, so that saved me.

That evening we were drinking with friends, some of them who live in Minnesota, and one opened the fridge, saw the six bottles of Schell, and said, “Ew, you got a lot of Schell.” That did not bode well, and I was immediately glad I’d only procured one six-pack.

My first Schell experience was with the Zommerfest, a Kolsch-style honey ale. And yeah, I’d have to agree with the Minnesotan: ewwww. It poured decently and was a nice golden, blah, blah, blah, but the taste …that honey added massive amounts of unpleasant bitterness that did nothing for this beer. I realize adding honey to an ale doesn’t actually add sweetness. I also know that there are a lot of people (Eddie Glick, for one) who like bitter beer. But “good” bitterness in beer should come from hops, and even I, who doesn’t really like very hoppy beer, can appreciate a nice hop complexity.

Bitterness from honey is not good. This left such a bad taste in my mouth that I could hardly believe it was a beer that claimed to celebrate summer. Maybe it was celebrating one of those obnoxiously hot, humid, gray, and rainy summer days, but that’s not really my idea of summer. This beer isn’t my idea of summer either.

Want to know how healthy the craft beer industry is? As always, look to Portland. Craft pioneer Bridgeport announces sudden closure, adding to a growing list of PDX casualties. Did Anheuser-Busch Chicago offer their shit beer to Cody Parkey before his missed field goal? Because that may explain why he "accidentally" biffed it. Chicago now has the most breweries of any city in the country. Other things Chicago has the most of: murders, mobsters, and Ditkas. Trying to spin it positive, BA releases end of year graphic. Only 5% growth in the craft sector when nearly 1000 new breweries opened? That's a collapse waiting to happen. R.I.P. Tallgrass... another casualty as the regional/national craft beer market continues to get squeezed. Wait... Constellation Brands cut all of the Ballast Point and Funky Buddha sales staff? They merged it with their Corona/Modelo staff?? We're SHOCKED!!! Pizza Beer founder crying about failure of company, blames everyone else. Reminder, the beer tasted like vomit. Try having better ideas or making better products so you're not a failure. It's Bud Light so doesn't really matter, but we expect this beer to be sitting around for awhile. Indiana brewery to open with controversial beer names to "get the conversation going". Translation: taking advantage of serious issues for free publicity. Hundreds of amazing beers in Wisconsin and the Cubs took back the one everyone drinks just because it exists and people have heard of it. How fitting...
